Cindy Anne Mathers
I have travelled my own unique path in a quest to find out how to create fairer systems for us all. I am known as an innovative change-maker and, despite many efforts, I have failed to fit into the current systems. For over twenty-five years, I have lived and worked around my country, Australia, as a nurse, teacher, mentor, holistic educator, adult trainer, and volunteer.
I have witnessed first-hand the impact that traumatised systems, have on us all, especially in the education and health sectors and particularly on the First Nations people. I have spent thousands of hours of study, travel, and volunteering, and have been on my own personal and ancestral healing journey.
I am aware that the disrespect and disregard of Human Rights at the time of colonisation created trauma that has remained in the collective psyche.
I understand that, as a country, we need to acknowledge we have all been impacted and that the restoration of Human Rights for all is needed for healing and moving forward together.
I have created The DELVE Formula™ as a simple pathway, using a Human Rights approach to creating change and new systems. You can download a one page summary below.
Sharing My Stories
I believe healing at an individual, ancestral, and collective level is possible, and together, we can do it.
- In DELVE-ing into Cultural Humility you will find a learning pathway forward, based on respect and deep listening.
- I created The DELVE Formula™ as a collaborative way to implement change in our nation:
- DECONSTRUCT—how did we get here as a nation?
- EXPLORE—the impact of abuse of Human Rights on us all
- LISTEN—and learn, with deep presence to the stories of First Nations people
- VIABLE—what First Nations-led / collaborative initiatives are working?
- ENERGISE—what works and fund community-led, place-based initiatives.
- In my book I apply this pathway to my real-life projects and experiences. It is a succinct and practical resource for those who wish to learn Cultural Humility and become part of creating a new nation that respects the Human Rights of all. There are questions and spaces to reflect at the end of each chapter to integrate and consolidate what you have learned. This is the sort of information that I would have liked to have learned in my ten years of university and when I arrived, knowing nothing, to live and work in a remote town with a high First Nations population in the 1990s.

- Critically IMPORTANT read for ALL Australians! DELVE-ing into Cultural Humility: How Respect and Deep Listening Can Heal A Nation is a beautiful read. Cindy's way of writing dances lightly and with ease through critically important but frequently silenced issues. What Cindy is sharing and talking about and what Cindy is inviting people to notice is also a deep place within ourselves. How can we move forward without acknowledging the entirety of what brought us, each and everyone of us, to here. All Australians, to call ourselves Australians, need to have the curiosity and the courage to engage in the conversations that need to be had. - Message from a Mentor Cindy Mathers is an amazingly knowledgeable and culturally sensitive person. As a professional Aboriginal woman, it has been refreshing and encouraging to work alongside a non-Aboriginal person with such a passion for offering community-informed opportunities. She recognizes barriers which Aboriginal people may face in all areas, but particularly in education. Cindy is able to create and facilitate culturally secure training, workshops and events, with a deep understanding of trauma affected learning. Cindy is never scared to think outside the box and provides an innovative approach to the development of resources. She always provides full support and goes above and beyond expectation, working within each person’s own ability levels to ensure best outcomes. Cindy builds and sustains respectful and equitable relationships, always maintaining collaboration with local Aboriginal community. This book is a tool I can use in my workplace for non-Aboriginal people who might like to be allies and are not sure how to do that!Sharon Kingaby, Mentor and Aboriginal Regional Development Officer, Contributing Author in Growing Up Aboriginal in Australia, 2018.

After reading DELVE-ing into Cultural Humility by Cindy Anne Mathers I am hopeful of a world where we can learn from the oldest surviving culture in the world.
